HTC is looking for a savior in VR, but it won’t find it

Times are certainly tight at HTC, but their plays in the consumer VR market are starting to look like Hail Marys. The company’s central VR platform play, their Viveport subscription product is regarded by a lot of people I’ve talked to as little more than bloatware, while their newest product, the Vive Pro, is an impressive piece of tech with a price tag that serves as a middle finger to the company’s fans. Today, HTC announced that it would be bundling previous generation controllers and sen...

Vive Pro Review: Way More Beautiful, Way Better—Way Too Expensive

When the Vive and the Oculus Rift came out in the spring of 2016, they did something incredible: they made VR actually worth caring about. Watch ‘Silicon Valley’ actors rip a VR bong in the hacker hostel

HBO’s Silicon Valley is returning to the air with Season 5 debuting on Sunday. To prep fans, HBO released a virtual reality experience where users will be able to explore Erlich Bachman’s hacker hostel and interact with a ton of easter eggs from the show. HBO showed off some “behind-the-scenes” footage of Richard and Dinesh playing through the experience and it’s all a bit to meta to handle. You can rip a bong, open up some Fage yogurt, play the piano and pretty much just trash the place. ...

After Trying the New Wireless Vive Pro There's No Going Back

When the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive came out in 2016, we entered a new era of virtual reality. Even so, modern VR still hasn’t caught on. It’s awkward,…Read more...

Virtual reality is still a niche hobby, but a small British startup is one of the first-movers in building games for the emerging medium. It has just released its second VR experience, "Operation Apex", for the HTC Vive. The game was produced in partnership with HTC's Vive Studios, a subsidiary which publishes longer games for the Vive in-house or with partners....

Ads are coming to VR and we really hope this is an April Fools’ joke

Virtual reality is getting even more realistic: ads are going to be everywhere. HTC is opening its Viveport to advertisers, offering the chance to put elaborate ads directly inside the VR world. The ads come in 2D and 3D flavors, as well as loading scenes, end scenes, or “app recommended.” The language used on the developer page is a little bizarre and comes very close to acknowledging that users might not appreciate this: Therefore, VR Advertising is not simply an interruption, but a synonym of...
