Whicker: Life on golf’s fringes – ‘Every day is a grind.’

SAN DIEGO — On Saturday, Willie Mack and Kamaiu Johnson and the rest of the Advocates Pro Golf Association Tour will play on Torrey Pines’ North Course. Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy & Co. will play on Torrey Pines South. Some holes will separate them by just a few yards. That’s tantalizing and maybe a little cruel, considering their worlds are, well, worlds apart. “The last sponsor I had was five years ago,” Mack said. “I’ve been doing OK lately. But if I break even for the year, that’s good.” Mack...

Tiger Woods stumbles early, is 6 strokes back after 36 holes at Farmers Insurance Open

SAN DIEGO — Tiger Woods added some points to his frequent-putter program on the first hole at Torrey Pines South. He four-putted the first green for a double-bogey 6, then played the next 17 holes at 3-under-par on Friday. It left the seven-time Farmers Insurance Open champ at 4-under after 36 holes, and six strokes behind leader Ryan Palmer. Woods also made a six on that hole three times in the 2008 U.S. Open, which didn’t keep him from winning in a playoff. A comeback victory Sunday would give...

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope shakes off bumpy start, finds perfect fit with Lakers

PHILADELPHIA — It was meant to be a putback. An easy shot. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope threw the ball back up toward the rim almost as quickly as he collected the rebound. Then, his heart sank as the ball stuck between the rim and the backboard – an unlikely result that added to his run of misfortune whenever he tried to do something that’s come naturally for so much of his life: score. This was not the plan. Feeling a special season ahead, Caldwell-Pope devoted more time than ever this offseason t...

Bellator 238: Aaron Pico ready to show he’s still the next big thing

LOS ANGELES — Three is a magic number. So goes the Schoolhouse Rock ditty that highlights some noteworthy trios. Like faith, hope and charity. The heart and the brain and the body. Then there’s the three on the right side – or, figuratively, the wrong side – of Aaron Pico’s record. You see, the kid once touted as having “all the makings of the next great MMA superstar,” per Bellator CEO Scott Coker upon signing the 17-year-old wrestling wunderkind to a long-term contract in 2014, isn’t supposed ...

USC basketball must address turnovers after Oregon loss

USC found itself in a double-overtime battle at No. 12 Oregon on Thursday night, the chance to grab a signature win within grasp. But the Trojan offense went silent after regulation, managing only eight points in the overtime periods and losing 79-70. “We were right there and we lost,” USC head coach Andy Enfield said to reporters following the loss. “It hurts when you lose a game and have a chance.” It might be particularly painful given the miscues that contributed to the USC loss. The Trojans...

UCLA’s budget whammy: The Bruins are bleeding cash and require a bailout from campus

After decades of balancing the books, UCLA’s athletic department finds itself in a hole. And not just any hole — a hole so deep, it resembles the worst of times at the Bruins’ sister school 400 miles to the North. UCLA athletics reported a whopping $18.9 million deficit for the 2019 fiscal year, according to a statement of revenues and expenses submitted to the NCAA and obtained by the Hotline. The Bruins generated $108.4 million in revenue against $127.3 million in expenses for the 12-month per...

Sashi Brown didn't get much time to turn the Browns around. Brown, who was put in charge of the Browns' personnel department in 2016 and fired in 2017, told the Akron Beacon Journal that he wants the Browns to pick a leader in their front office and stick with him. “I hope they get the time to do it and that there's true alignment throughout the building and some conviction and what I would say the organizational faith that maybe hasn't been there across some of the rash of c...
