Angels counting on catchers’ pitch-framing skills to boost pitching staff

In retrospect, Angels fans are certainly all longing for the days when their primary concern was if the team had acquired enough pitching to contend this season. A winter of hand-wringing about the Angels missing out on marquee pitching acquisitions has given way to a spring of wondering if the coronavirus pandemic would subside soon enough for there even to be a baseball season. In between, though, during a month of spring training in Arizona, the Angels had grown quietly optimistic that they h...

Photos: Palm Sunday services are livecast from mostly empty rooms to full hearts amid coronavirus closures

This Palm Sunday Mass on April 5 was like none before at Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Los Angeles. Instead of a chapel packed with parishioners, Our Lady Queen of Angels –– otherwise known as La Placita –– was empty on a day where Catholics usually wave blessed palm fronds as a collective body. An empty church on Palm Sunday due to coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions Father Arturo Corral does a livestream Mass service at Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Los Angeles ...

New Balance Tekela v2 Pro – Standard + Wide Fit Options!

It is a boot that continues to build on the growing stature of the New Balance brand; the NB Tekela v2 Pro. Think of these as a boot built for the playmakers, the game changers, the ones who always influence a game. GETTIN' SMALL: How Low Can You Go?

I'm proof that a first fiberglass fly rod leads to many more fiberglass fly rods and over the years of writing T.F.M., I've seen others do the same.  Bob Mallard of the Native Fish Coalition is sliding down the rabbit hole and you might remember an article on T.F.M. that he wrote last year and then more recently an article on Midcurrent as well.  He's sharing again today on his plight for a short light line fly rod and how Marty at Deep Bend Rodworks built him exactly what he was looking for.  E...

PAUL PUCKETT - The Corona Virus Chronicles - No. 18

I like how Paul Puckett thinks and his words "The beauty of having good artist buddies is that we don't "compete" we just inspire and make each other better!" are what I needed to read this morning and his sketch is super fun too. It's been awhile since I've featured artist Ed Anderson on T.F.M. but I have a few of his journals to share next week.  You can see more of his work on his website, Facebook and Instagram. Return Or Not Next Season

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press, Amid the uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus pandemic, here’s a look at who’ll be back next season and who’ll be gone from the roster as it stood March 12, when the league put the season hold.  F Justin Abdelkader The evidence: He’s signed at a $4.25 million cap hit through 2022-23, making a buyout prohibitive (six years at annual cap hits ranging from $1.55 million to $2.35 million). Pension bomb fuse just got shorter

Homeowners have enough to worry about in the current coronavirus crisis. They face an April 10 deadline for the second installment of their annual property tax bill and there is no relief — yet — coming from either the governor’s office or the majority of county treasurer/tax collectors. Many taxpayers have been furloughed or laid off and the chances are high that property values throughout America will take a hit — even in California. How could things possibly get worse? Here’s how. The coronav...

Coronavirus: Southern California homebuying plummets 30% to 6-year low

Coronavirus fallout has slashed Southern California house hunting to the lowest level in six-plus years, according to one real estate tracker. It’s been a wild few weeks for California housing amid a battle to halt the pandemic’s spread. As business limits grew statewide, at least 1.5 million Californians filed for unemployment benefits. ReportsOnHousing tracks brokers’ listing services to gauge how many existing homes are for sale and pending sales contracts. The latest results, as of April 2, ...

U.S. ‘wasted’ months before preparing for coronavirus pandemic

By MICHAEL BIESECKER WASHINGTON (AP) — As the first alarms sounded in early January that an outbreak of a novel coronavirus in China might ignite a global pandemic, the Trump administration squandered nearly two months that could have been used to bolster the federal stockpile of critically needed medical supplies and equipment. A review of federal purchasing contracts by The Associated Press shows federal agencies largely waited until mid-March to begin placing bulk orders of N95 respirator mas...

The toxic side effects of coronavirus lockdowns

Panic is dangerous. More people can be killed by the stampede than by whatever triggered it. Unfortunately, public officials in California have an incentive to fan the flames of panic. How else can a handful of elected officials with no specialized knowledge of anything except fundraising persuade millions of people to obey their directives to stay in their homes, watching from a distance as they lose their jobs and savings? It goes against human nature to sit quietly while being destroyed. Ther...

California economy clobbered — for how long?

We’ve all seen slow motion video clips of horrific damage from head-on automobile collisions staged in auto safety testing facilities. Something like that is happening to California’s economy. Until a few weeks ago, the globe’s fifth largest economy was humming along with record-high output and record-low unemployment. Employers were begging for workers and state and local governments were enjoying revenue surges. “California’s unemployment rate remained at its record low of 3.9% in February as ...

The blessing of time on our hands

Last week, I finally swallowed my pride and went to my local grocery store during their special senior shopping hour. This is a tough pill to swallow, especially in Hollywood, were too many candles on a birthday cake has killed more careers than the House Un-American Activities Committee.
