Angels counting on catchers’ pitch-framing skills to boost pitching staff

In retrospect, Angels fans are certainly all longing for the days when their primary concern was if the team had acquired enough pitching to contend this season. A winter of hand-wringing about the Angels missing out on marquee pitching acquisitions has given way to a spring of wondering if the coronavirus pandemic would subside soon enough for there even to be a baseball season. In between, though, during a month of spring training in Arizona, the Angels had grown quietly optimistic that they h...

With authorities urging the community to steel itself for a heartbreaking week ahead, Los Angeles County saw nearly 1,400 new cases of novel coronavirus reported over the weekend — climbing to nearly 6,000 since the outbreak began — and more than 40 new deaths. The county reported 663 new cases Sunday and 15 more deaths. On Saturday, 711 new cases and 28 deaths were reported. Photos: Palm Sunday services are livecast from mostly empty rooms to full hearts amid coronavirus closures

This Palm Sunday Mass on April 5 was like none before at Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Los Angeles. Instead of a chapel packed with parishioners, Our Lady Queen of Angels –– otherwise known as La Placita –– was empty on a day where Catholics usually wave blessed palm fronds as a collective body. An empty church on Palm Sunday due to coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions Father Arturo Corral does a livestream Mass service at Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Los Angeles ...

It is a boot that continues to build on the growing stature of the New Balance brand; the NB Tekela v2 Pro. The driver was declared dead at the scene, said Officer Norma Eisenman, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Police Department. The driver was the sole occupant, she said. Pension bomb fuse just got shorter

Homeowners have enough to worry about in the current coronavirus crisis. They face an April 10 deadline for the second installment of their annual property tax bill and there is no relief — yet — coming from either the governor’s office or the majority of county treasurer/tax collectors. Many taxpayers have been furloughed or laid off and the chances are high that property values throughout America will take a hit — even in California. How could things possibly get worse? Here’s how. The coronav...

Coronavirus: Southern California homebuying plummets 30% to 6-year low

Coronavirus fallout has slashed Southern California house hunting to the lowest level in six-plus years, according to one real estate tracker. It’s been a wild few weeks for California housing amid a battle to halt the pandemic’s spread. As business limits grew statewide, at least 1.5 million Californians filed for unemployment benefits. ReportsOnHousing tracks brokers’ listing services to gauge how many existing homes are for sale and pending sales contracts. The latest results, as of April 2, ...

U.S. ‘wasted’ months before preparing for coronavirus pandemic

By MICHAEL BIESECKER WASHINGTON (AP) — As the first alarms sounded in early January that an outbreak of a novel coronavirus in China might ignite a global pandemic, the Trump administration squandered nearly two months that could have been used to bolster the federal stockpile of critically needed medical supplies and equipment. A review of federal purchasing contracts by The Associated Press shows federal agencies largely waited until mid-March to begin placing bulk orders of N95 respirator mas...

The toxic side effects of coronavirus lockdowns

Panic is dangerous. More people can be killed by the stampede than by whatever triggered it. Unfortunately, public officials in California have an incentive to fan the flames of panic. How else can a handful of elected officials with no specialized knowledge of anything except fundraising persuade millions of people to obey their directives to stay in their homes, watching from a distance as they lose their jobs and savings? It goes against human nature to sit quietly while being destroyed. Ther...

California economy clobbered — for how long?

We’ve all seen slow motion video clips of horrific damage from head-on automobile collisions staged in auto safety testing facilities. Something like that is happening to California’s economy. Until a few weeks ago, the globe’s fifth largest economy was humming along with record-high output and record-low unemployment. Employers were begging for workers and state and local governments were enjoying revenue surges. “California’s unemployment rate remained at its record low of 3.9% in February as ...

The blessing of time on our hands

Last week, I finally swallowed my pride and went to my local grocery store during their special senior shopping hour. This is a tough pill to swallow, especially in Hollywood, were too many candles on a birthday cake has killed more careers than the House Un-American Activities Committee. I needed a few things, needed them so badly, I was willing to risk death to get them. Toilet paper (of course) because we all recognize, toilet paper is the foundation upon which civilization is built, the only...

Coronavirus: Paid sick days save all of our lives

Adam Schlesinger and his Fountains of Wayne co-writer Chris Collingwood created better, sadder, funnier songs about the angst of lonely women amid the awful blandness of office culture than anyone in American pop music. Their only contemporary rivals at making short-story like workplace scenes within the tiny confines of a tune are the English band Squeeze. For those who are less than fan-boys, the Schlesinger songs you know are the MTV hit “Stacy’s Mom,” who definitely had it going on, and the ...

Amid coronavirus testing shortage, doctors launch pop-up sites in underinsured areas

Welcome to the era of pop-up coronavirus testing. As leaders in Los Angeles and L.A. County scramble for ways to make coronavirus testing accessible to more underserved communities, a collection of high-minded volunteers accomplished that goal last week in Culver City. The new testing site at the Blackbird House offered a limited number of free COVID-19 tests for under- and uninsured residents, creating a complement to the growing patchwork of drive-thru/walk-up public and private sites across t...
