The Bay Area Newsgroup reports that on January 31st, Cody's cellphone rang at 6:49 a.m. "You've got your first positive," the voice said. Kobe Bryant elected to Basketball Hall of Fame in solemn moment for the sport

On Saturday morning, the Basketball Hall of Fame made a formal announcement that’s been unofficially marked on calendars since the Black Mamba retired: Kobe Bryant is a first-ballot honoree in the sport’s most hallowed ground. It is, however, an unexpectedly sobering moment in a world that has had to do both without basketball and without Bryant. The Laker legend whose 20-year career netted 18 All-Star appearances, five championships and one MVP award was a shoo-in for the Hall – one of basketba...

Who’s Never Picked #1 in the Draft

As NHL Draft Day nears, we thought it would be a good time to remind you of which teams have never picked first in the NHL Entry Draft. Written by former contributor James Tanner and originally published on Sept. 7, 2015. When the Edmonton Oilers selected Connor McDavid first overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, he became the 53rd player picked at the top of the draft. The first was Gary Monahan, back in 1963, selected by the Montreal Canadiens. Monahan isn’t very famous, but he di...

Opinion: What Atlanta's snowmageddon teaches us about social distancing

On Wednesday, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp announced a state-wide order to shelter in place. While some skeptics remain unconvinced that this is the right move, two 2014 snowstorms in Georgia may prove otherwise.

What Atlanta's snowmageddon teaches us about social distancing

These two back-to-back ice storms in 2014 led to more than seven days of emergency declarations, and effectively kept people in their homes. In the hospitals where we were working, we noted what appeared to be a shortening of the flu season following the snowstorm and the subsequent shutdown.

Best of Georgia Hip Hop for Mixtape Friday

For my first Mixtape Friday of the year, we had to do something special. Last week, we debuted the new track from Horus Gump and an idea came to me. Georgia has a lot of talent and have had their fair share of influential talent. We can go all the way back to Raheem the Dream, Kilo Ali and Freak Nasty. Outkast took the reins and became arguably the greatest duo ever in hip hop. The Dungeon Family and Goodie Mob became stars and Georgia hip hop was at an all-time high. T.I. and Ludacris took ove...

Brad Holmes has been trying to explain to his son: This is not normal. B.J. is 22 months old. Old enough to know his dad is home. Too young to know he’d better enjoy it while he can. “I’ve told him, ‘Please appreciate this,’ ” Holmes said on the phone this week. “It’s the first time in 15 years I’ve been home this much in March.” As the Rams’ director of college scouting, Holmes is used to spending March and April on the road looking at prospects and at the team’s headquarters in Thousand Oaks i...

Rams’ Austin Blythe has lost free-agent teammates, but not his optimism

The medium was unusual. The message, coming from a Rams player, was familiar. Offensive lineman Austin Blythe spoke from his house in Williamsburg, Iowa, in a video-stream press conference Wednesday, the Zoom hookup replacing the customary in-person appearance by a newly re-signed free agent. Blythe said he has enjoyed the forced time at home with his wife, Kylie, and their 3-year-old son and 3-month-old daughter, and has been able to improvise a workout routine using the weight rack and treadmi...
