Hotels U.S. issues security alert for Playa del Carmen

The U.S. government on Wednesday issued a security alert for the Mexico resort town of Playa del Carmen and closed its consular agency there.

The alert may have been triggered by a Feb. 21 explosion on a tourist ferry that injured 19 Mexican citizens and at least five U.S. citizens, according to the Associated Press. The AP also reported that undetonated explosive devices were found last week on another vessel owned by the same ferry company.


Passenger jet slides off runway, catches on fire in Nepal

A passenger plane owned by a joint Bangladeshi-U.S. firm has crashed in Kathmandu, Nepal, catching on fire after careening off the runway. The US-Bangla Airlines plane was on a flight from Dhaka, Bangladesh to Kathmandu but overshot the runway upon landing, officials told CBS News.

The Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 twin turboprop was carrying 71 people when it attempted to land at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport. US-Bangla Airlines told CBS News it was not immediately able to provide any information regarding the crash.

Nepali police officials have told the Associated Press that at least 38 people were killed and 23 others injured in the fiery crash. At least 10 people were unaccounted.


Alaia resort in Belize to be in Marriott’s Autograph Collection

Marriott International will debut its Autograph Collection in Belize with the opening of the all-villa Alaia resort in San Pedro on Ambergris Caye island in 2020.

Alaia broke ground late last year with a five-phase launch plan that features a conversion of 35 existing units, 56 two-bedroom condominiums and eight oceanfront villas to comprise a collection of 56 residences and eight villas available for purchase when completed.

Owners will have the option to include their residences in the rental management program, according to owner, developer and managing director Andrew Ashcroft.


New Viking Sun Christened in Metropolitan Shanghai

During its inaugural world cruise, Viking just christened its fourth ocean ship—the Viking Sun—in Shanghai on March 8, 2018. The ceremony took place during the ocean line’s maiden call in China, also signifying the first cruise ship to be named on the Bund in the city.

“I am very pleased to officially name our newest ship in Shanghai. We care deeply about tourism in China, and we have been bringing river cruise guests here since 2004,” said Torstein Hagen, Chairman of Viking, in a press release.
